Ceramicist Lene Kuhl Jakobsen's refined design asethetic has been used to great effect in creating these antiquity styled Vases for the NGV 150th Anniversary product brief. To celebrate the 150 Years of Melbourne's oldest arts instituiton, the National Gallery of Victoria Shop and Craft Victoria's New Craft project combined to create a range of products. Working with a selected group of Craft Victoria's professional members, the partnership has seen the development of a beautiful range of 150 NGV Years branded products, available exclusively at the NGV Shop.
These vases inspired by the NGV International's iconic water wall entrance are in the shape of a waterdrop and are perfect for a few flowers or just a single bloom. The cobalt blue decorations in the form of jug shapes make reference to the decorated porcelain pieces from many periods and cultures held in the NGV's collection. The decorations in shape of water drops serve as a reminder of the importance of water in the Australian conscious and the action we all take to preserve water.
Each vase has been individually thrown on the pottery wheel from porcelain clay. The handcut cobaltblue decorations are applied under the glossy glaze and the vases are then fired to a high temperature which insures a durable and watertight product.
Lene Kuhl Jakobsen grew up in Denmark where she completed a degree in ceramics before moving to Melbourne in 1985. Working from a home studio she makes mainly functional pieces. Kuhl Jakobsen design approach combines the natural simplicity of the pot shaped by the hand with the restrained use of decoration.
