PeTRABioI have just recently completed an MVA at Sydney College of the Arts where I have focused my research on the connection between folklore and national identity, particularly in Japanese Culture. This investigation led me to examine various aspects of Japanese Pop Culture e.g: anime/manga, designer collectable toys and computer games and its relationship to traditional Shinto/Buddhist beliefs. My MVA installation 'An (un)familiar Tale Pt1', consists of five-six wall panels that depict a tragic story of forbidden love in the spirit world. It is a highly narrative piece that considers the pleasure and play we participate in as a child; relating to the phenomenology of enjoyment, and to the uncanny elements of fairytales, myths, and legends. These fantasy worlds are created from ceramic materials and mixed media, representing uncanny environments inspired by pop surrealism, animation, street art, fairy tales, and my cat - Baron von Munchausen. |
