WraptinfeltBioAfter graduating in arts therapy and getting burned out quickly as a therapist, I decided that making my own art would be my recovery. I'm drawn to making fine yet strong wearable fabric in Nuno felt which is a process of laminating the wool and silk fibres to a carrier fabric such as silk. It is 'cool felt' – cooler in weight for the more temperate Australian climate and 'cool' as in the slang – for an admired aesthetic of attitude or style. Felt, however, evokes an element of warmth which I find is spiritual. From the outset I've loved being in the 'colour fields' while laying out the fleece. Colour inspires me – luscious rovings in vibrant colour-ways or the rich earthy colours that reflect the Australian landscape. We tend to forget how colours affect us both psychologically and physiologically. My goal is to create diaphanous colourful felt which is expansive and uplifting for me to work and for those who wear it. My scarves, wraps and garments are handmade wearable art pieces. |
