Featuring Simon & Jemila MacEwan
Event Dates: Monday 23 August – Saturday 4 September
Venue: Craft Victoria, Gallery 3 and enCOUNTER, 31 Flinders Lane, Melbourne
Artist Talks: Saturday 4 September, 2pm
Continuing the collaborative series, brother and sister Simon & Jemila MacEwan take the shared books of their childhood as the starting point of their installation.
In any family, each member remembers the same events differently and every reader experiences their own version of a book.
A combination of illustration, pop-up books, sculpture and shadow play transforms the gallery into a tiny paper theatre, like the imaginary landscapes of one’s childhood bedroom floor. During the course of the exhibition books tumble from their shelves and their contents escape into the gallery. Strange beasts roam the paper landscape and stories become confused as their characters mingle.
Jemila works as a set and costume designer and as an artist; Simon is an artist who also works as a jeweller and illustrator. In this exhibition they combine their diverse skills to explore the childhood influences on their creative practices.
