The recipient of the 2009 Fresh! Award is RMIT student Michaela Bruton for her silver filigree work, Vol. 0.1, 0.0, 0.2, 1.4, 1.3, 1.1, 1.0, 1.2.

Michaela will receive a professional development package that includes a 2010 exhibition at Sofitel Melbourne on Collins, a year of mentoring by Craft Victoria and $500 cash. For her winning piece Michaela investigated 18th Century Chinese filigree and explored its ability to capture and claim space before using these techniques to construct an intricate, contemporary sculptural piece.

Fresh! surveys the creative diversity and exceptional technical skill of graduating craft and design students across Victoria.

Presented by Craft Victoria since 1993, Fresh! has launched the careers of some of Melbourne’s best known practitioners and continues to be one of the most respected forecasters of emerging craft and design talent within Australia.

Each year a team of invited professionals preview graduate exhibitions in over 35 departments within Tertiary and TAFE institutions across Victoria. The freshest works are hand-picked from the fields of ceramics, glass, jewellery, gold & silver-smithing, fashion, textiles, industrial and furniture design.
