This information session is designed to improve writing skills for makers across a variety of mediums. Learn how to compose a compelling exhibition proposal and artist statement, produce an effective media release and develop an engaging catalogue essay. Presenters include Nella Themelios, Coordinating Curator, Craft Victoria; Alice Blackwood, Editor, DQ magazine and Meredith Turnbull, artist, curator and writer.

Presenters:

Nella Themelios
Nella started with Craft Victoria as a volunteer in 2005. She was the Curatorial Intern in 2007 for the annual Melbourne Scarf Festival: Spin, before taking up the position of Coordinating Curator in 2008. Nella holds a Bachelor of Arts (Cultural Studies) and a Graduate Certificate (Art History) from the University of Melbourne and is currently completing a Master’s degree in Curatorship at the same institution. She has written numerous catalogue essays and has contributed to various non-refereed arts publications. Recent curatorial projects include: Insert Coin Here (2010); Shoe Show (2009); Chicks on Speed, Viva La Craft! (2009) and Give/Take (2009). She has recently been appointed as the Chair of Bus Projects.

Alice Blackwood
As Editor of DQ magazine, Alice divides her time between Melbourne and Sydney, working with designers, studios, organisations and institutions to bring DQ readers the very latest news on the people, products and parties in design. Taking an active and dedicated interest to her field of specialty, Alice has worked across the industry with organisations such as Artisan idea:skill:product in Brisbane, and the Melbourne International Design Festival in Melbourne. She also brings journalistic expertise to the sector, having worked with the Courier-Mail newspaper in Brisbane, and contributed to a range of industry publications nationally. Her enthusiasm and passion for Australasian design is the driving force behind her ongoing work in the design community.

Meredith Turnbull
Meredith Turnbull is a Melbourne based artist, curator and writer. She completed a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Art History at La Trobe University, Victoria in 2000 and a Bachelor of Fine Art at RMIT University, Victoria in 2005. Meredith is currently undertaking a Masters of Fine Art in Sculpture at Monash University, Victoria. From 2006 to 2010 Turnbull was Gallery Manager/Curator of the Margaret Lawrence Gallery, Victorian College of the Arts and was editor of the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art's online magazine ACCAMag from 2004 to 2005 where she also worked as a Project Manager and Assistant to the Artistic Director. She has acted as a curatorial adviser to the Next Wave Festival and Craft Victoria, edited publications and written numerous essays for magazines, exhibition catalogues and online forums. She has also been a regular speaker and guest assessor for RMIT University in Sculpture and Interior Design and is currently a teaching associate in the Faculty of Art and Design at Monash University. Meredith is currently exhibiting work at Craft Victoria with Bridie Lunney in Scale Practice.
